The Ideas That Shape Civilizations- Why What We Believe about Our Origins May Be One of the Most Important Conversations of Our Time

Ideas have consequences. They don't simply influence individual opinions—they shape cultures, civilizations, and generations. Throughout history, the ideas embraced by a society have determined how people understand truth, morality, human dignity, and purpose. Few ideas have had a greater influence than the answer to one simple question: Where did we come from?

For centuries, Western civilization largely viewed the universe as the intentional work of a Creator—a world filled with order, beauty, and purpose. Over the past century and a half, however, another narrative has become the prevailing worldview taught throughout much of our educational system: Darwinian evolution, the idea that life arose through unguided natural processes over immense periods of time. Whichever perspective one embraces, the implications reach far beyond science. They shape how we answer equally profound questions: Who are we? Why are we here? Does our life have meaning and purpose?

In this week's episode of The UPside Conversations, I sit down with science educator, author, and founder of the Wonders Center & Science Museum David Rives for a thoughtful exploration of these life-shaping questions. Together we discuss the evidence often presented for intelligent design, the assumptions behind evolutionary theory, and why this conversation continues to matter—not only in science classrooms, but in our understanding of humanity itself. Rather than asking viewers to accept easy answers, our hope is to encourage thoughtful exploration, honest inquiry, and a renewed sense of wonder.

Whether today's conversation affirms what you've always believed or inspires you to look more deeply at the evidence, we hope it reminds you that some questions are simply too important not to ask. After all, the way we understand our origins inevitably shapes the way we understand our future. I invite you to watch the episode, join the conversation, and share your thoughts. Some of the most meaningful journeys begin with the courage to ask a great question.
