What happens when the work you believe you were born to do suddenly asks something of you that your conscience cannot give? In this episode of The UPside Conversations, host Marion MacKenzie sat down with critical-care nurse Kimberly Overton, BSN, RN, who has devoted 25 years to critical-care nursing. Nursing wasn't simply a career—she had known since childhood that it was what she wanted to do. Then the COVID-19 pandemic arrived, and the profession she loved became the setting for one of the most difficult decisions of her life.
Working on the front lines in critical care, Kimberly began questioning policies and treatment protocols she believed conflicted with her professional judgment and her understanding of patient-centered care. As those concerns deepened, she found herself confronting a painful question: Could she remain in the profession she loved without compromising her conscience? Ultimately, Kimberly decided she could not. Walking away was anything but easy. She describes grieving the loss of her career and experiencing anger, sadness and heartbreak—but says the choice, while painful, became clear.
But Kimberly's story didn't end with what she left behind. In 2021, she founded the Nurse Freedom Network, initially bringing nurses together to share concerns and advocate for greater professional autonomy. Her vision eventually grew beyond advocacy into helping create Remnant Healthcare, an alternative model offering functional medicine, concierge nursing and professional patient advocacy. Kimberly says she wanted to create a place where nurses could use their knowledge, skills and passion to pursue more holistic, patient-centered care.
Today, Kimberly calls this the most fulfilling work she has ever done—not only because she believes she is helping patients pursue greater wellness, but because she is giving nurses an opportunity to rediscover why they entered the profession in the first place. Her story raises a question that reaches far beyond healthcare or the pandemic: What are we willing to risk to remain true to what we believe is right? Sometimes the loss of one chapter isn't the end of the story at all. Sometimes, as Kimberly discovered, it becomes the place where something entirely new begins.
